Polly and Lorie met and became friends through their experience working together at a Rockford area public school. Their backgrounds cover a wide variety of talents and experiences.
Polly is Sicilian, growing up in an Italian neighborhood in south Rockford before moving to Winnebago. Polly grew up baking many traditional Italian recipes. Her culture plays a large role in her baking style and personality. She earned an associates degree in Parks and Recreation at Rock Valley College, but also has experience working in the legal field.
Lorie is Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish (just to name a few) growing up in on the eastside of Rockford. Lorie is inspired by the homemade dishes prepared by her grandmothers. Lorie earned her bachelors degree in vocal music education at Augustana College. She later earned masters degrees in counseling as well as educational administration from NIU.
During the holidays, Polly and Lorie discovered their shared passion for family, culture, and baking. We hope you will not only enjoy our baked goods, but share in our affection for the people of the Rockford community.
The origin of our name, Bella Luna, means "beautiful moon" in Italian. The term Bella Luna is used many times in our favorite movie Moonstruck. In this movie the Bella Luna is also called "Cosmo's Moon". Cosmo's also the name of Polly's dad. Bella Luna Bakery is named in honor of Cosmo Matranga.
